Why the Shower Goes Thin When the Dishwasher Fills
Water reaches your boundary at one pressure, through one bore, and everything indoors divides that between them. One tap open hides it, because one tap asks for very little. Open a second outlet and the service carries both at once, and the pressure it loses on the way to each rises faster than the flow does. That’s why the complaint here is rarely about the water and nearly always about timing.
Nothing in that description involves a failure. The pipe under your lawn can be intact, unblocked and exactly as it went in, and still be too small for the house that grew on top of it. What arrived later is an ensuite or a second bathroom, a dishwasher, a washing machine, and reticulation on the garden. The bore leaving the meter never changed to suit any of them.

The Outlet That Complains First Is Rarely the Faulty One
Whichever fixture is last on the run is the one that reports the problem. Pressure disappears on the way to it: every metre of pipe takes some, every bend and valve a little more, and lifting water to a higher fixture more again. Making Two Quotes Comparable Before You Choose One
Two quotes headed “re-pipe” can describe genuinely different pieces of work, and the difference lives under the heading, not in the total. Ask each scope to name six things.
- Where the new run starts and where it stops. The meter to the house is one job. The meter through to every fixture is another. A scope naming neither end isn’t a scope.
- The size and the material going in. Bore is the whole point of the exercise here, so a like-for-like replacement in a modern material solves nothing.
- The route, and what has to open to take it. Through the roof space, along an external wall, or trenched across the front garden: three jobs, and three different levels of disruption.
- Which fixtures the sizing counted. If the ensuite is still a drawing, have it counted anyway. Sizing to today’s outlets and adding two more next winter puts you back where you started.
- Who reinstates what, and to what finish. Lawn, paving, plaster and tiling do not put themselves back, and reinstatement written into one quote and left out of the other is a common reason two figures look nothing alike.
- What each one excludes. Tapware, the tiling behind it, the electrical work on a pump or a controller. Exclusions are where a thin number hides.
Then ask both plumbers to answer against one written scope instead of their own. A total weighed against a total says nothing about what either intends to do.
Where the Cover Stops When Only Part of the Service Is New
A re-run seldom replaces everything, so on a service finishing half new and half original the wording of a guarantee matters more than its size.
