Find out what your fixture connects to first. In a house the branch from a kitchen or bathroom joins one main and leaves at the street, carrying your household alone. In a block of flats it joins a stack, and the stack joins a run taking every dwelling above you. When that run stops, waste rises at the lowest opening it can find, so a ground-floor bathroom takes what a kitchen two levels up sent down.

Each Step Reaches Further Up the Line Than the Last
Measure whatever you tried before ringing by how far from the fixture it got.
A plunger and a supermarket bottle work inside the trap under that fixture, and a hand auger off the hire counter reaches the bend behind it. A kettle of boiling water travels further and lifts nothing out. None of the three reaches the run those branches join.
Drain cleaning with a machine head, or hydro jet cleaning at pressure, is the first rung past your own walls. Our plumber enters at an inspection opening or a gully, and a jet scours the pipe to full bore instead of punching a channel through the plug. Where fat or wipes put it there, that’s the job done.
A clear travels only downstream of where it entered. The camera goes the other way. AS/NZS 3500 governs sanitary drainage in Australia and New Zealand, down to pipe materials, jointing, falls and the access openings a run must provide, and those openings let our plumber enter at one lot to read a line serving several. Footage carries a distance from the entry point, so the fault has a position in the building.
A run that blocks repeatedly with clean footage behind it is reporting on how it is used, and on a common line that use belongs to households the caller hasn’t met.
